Hello Lacrosse Fans,

Time to start the 2022 Girls Travel  Lacrosse season!!!

WAIVER - MUST DO

Before I begin:   MBYLL asks that everyone register with them. This is your

Insurance for the season.  Nobody can step on the field for practices or games

If the player is not registered with MBYLL.  Copy the following link:  MBYLL Player Memberships - http://assn.la/Reg/?r=4:174377

For those of you who have never seen girls lacrosse before, it is completely different from boys lacrosse.  There is no contact in girls lacrosse - except at the 7th/8th grade level which has a modified check (possibly full check this season)  of the stick - and there are different rules.  It is closer to the pure lacrosse the Native Americans once played.

BASIC RULES

We have just a few rules for the girls that we expect from them and all the coaches as well:

1.  Follow safety rules at ALL TiMES!!!!

2.  They respect their teammates/coaches and the opposing teams’ coaches, players and the referees.

3.  NO GIRL at any time may walk home or leave the practice area.  Each girl MUST enter a car with an adult in the parking lot of the practice area.  THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you tell a coach it is okay for your daughter to walk home or ride their bike please make sure the coach knows BEFORE practice or the game.

4. If you are going to be late and the coach needs to wait please let them know before practice OR if you are running late leave a message on their cell phone.

5.  Every girl should show up to practices and games to play with the proper equipment and uniform.

6.  They should dress for success.  It is very cold when we start in March and very hot when we finish in June.  They should come dressed for the weather!!!

7.  They come to have a lot of fun!!

EQUIPMENT

Each girl should have the following equipment for each practice and each game:

1.  GIRLS lacrosse stick

2.  eye protection - cage is probably the best choice

3.  COLORED mouth guard (not white or clear)- MANDATORY - nothing hanging out of the mouth - make sure they fit properly. HAVE MORE THAT 1 MOUTH GUARD AND KEEP IT IN THE CAR!!!!!

4.  Cleats - soccer

5.  Girls lacrosse gloves (OPTIONAL) they offer little protection

6.  water bottle or two (Please have the girls come already hydrated and not hungry.   This will help them immensely out on the field)

g.  hand warmers for those frigid practices (practices only) (OPTIONAL)

h.  NO JEWELRY ALLOWED AT ANYTIME - ESPECIALLY GAMES!!!!  NO EXCEPTIONS AT ALL!!  If they want to get their ears pierced they should wait until after the season ends.  No covering of pierced earrings are allowed.

7th/8th Grade Team

(1) Practice on Saturday at Landrigan Field at 3:45 - 5:15 p.m.

Practices are important - we ask that all the girls try to make at least one practice per week.  This is where they will learn how to play, and improve, where to go during certain offensive and defensive plays, how to handle various situations, etc.

We also ask that the girls pay attention to their coaches and not goof off during the practice.  We want them to have fun, but not be disruptive.

For 1st/2nd  and 7th/8th we will do a light skills evaluation to divide up the girls into 2 equal teams.  This will be done during one of the first few practices of the season.

GAMES

1st/2nd - Play their home games at Mullen Field (At the Galvin on the Main St. side)

3rd/4th -  Play their home games at Mullen Field (At the Galvin on the Main St. side)

5th/6th  - Play their home games at Walton Field (At the Galvin on the North Ave. side)

7th/8th  - Play their home games at Walton Field (At the Galvin on the North Ave. side)

For the games on April 10th and June 5th HOME games may be at Walton for 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th.  Stay tuned.

Usually, at the lower levels we will divide the girls into three groups - defense, midfield, attack.  They will usually play that position for 1 or 2 weeks then switch to the next position.

We want all the girls to play all the field positions.  This helps them to see what is involved with each position and learn what to do in different situations from each position.  Playing each position will help your daughter become a better player.  They will be able to see where each position plays on the field, how they interact with other players/positions, this will help them with the rules and to know the field better.  All of this will help them improve as a lacrosse player.

We want every girl when they "graduate" from our program to their HS to know the basics, i.e., passing, catching, picking up ground balls and cradling.  They should know the rules of the GIRLS GAME, know the field and all the positions.

It is not about who has the most goals. We have no superstars.  It is about learning the game, being a good teammate and friend, how to win and lose gracefully and having fun.

GOALIE

For 1st/2nd if someone wants to play goalie we will play them.  If we do not have any volunteers then we will turn the goal around and play without a goalie.  For 3rd/4th,5th/6th and 7th/8th we ask who wants to play goalie.  If we have a volunteer then they can play (usually ½ a game) then someone else will come in.  If there are no volunteers, then we will choose someone.

This year for 7th/8th  goalies we have girls that have said that they would like to play goalie.  So they will be our main goaltenders for the season.

INJURIES

If a player gets hurt on the field they will come off the field and be assessed by their coaches.  If we feel that they have a concussion or another injury that the coach feels should keep them off the field, they will not return to the field that day.  If they do have a concussion or another injury (i.e., broken bone) that keeps them from practices or games - until we have a note from your doctor saying they are cleared to play they will stay on the sidelines.  They are welcome to come watch the practices and games (in uniform) but without a note they will not play.

GAME PREPARATION

We play an (8) games season, starting on Sunday, April 3rd..  Each team will usually have (4) home and (4) away games.  Your coach  will send an email out each week or use TeamSnap with the game arrival time, game time and game location.  The arrival time will be at least 30 minutes prior to the game. Your coach will have their cell phone with them at all games/practices if you need to contact them.  They will send their cell numbers and e-mail addresses to their respective teams before the season begins.

Please  let your head coach  know if you cannot make a game or if you will be late so that they can prepare the game roster accordingly.  You will be able to view the game schedule soon.  The full game schedule will be posted on the wakefieldlacrosse.net website under Girls Travel.

If you are running late for picking up your child(ren) please call/text your coach(es) so that they know!!!

1st/2nd and 3rd/4th have the White and Red shirts and a skirt.

The White shirt is for HOME games and the RED shirt is for AWAY games.

UMPIRES/CHEERING

We ask that during games everyone sit in the stands and cheer on both teams.  The girls are expected to respect not only their own teammates and coaches but also the opposing team, coaches and umpires.  Before the game if the coaches have questions about rules/situations they will chat with the umpire to clarify.  After that, if the girls or the coaches have any questions about a call the umpire makes we can ask the umpire during halftime or after the game.  At no time is anyone to yell at an umpire.  They do their best and like all of us make mistakes.

TURF FIELDS

Wakefield is fortunate to have new TURF fields that we need to show some love.  We are asking that ONLY WATER IS BROUGHT TO THE FIELDS.  NO FOOD, CANDY, GUM OR ANY OTHER FORM OF DRINK.  If we all take care of our new fields we will have them for a long time!!!
